Motihari Brigade describes their music as “Rock-n-Roll Thoughtcrime” for independent minds. Founded by U.K.-born singer, guitarist, and songwriter Eric Winston, the band is known for philosophical songs that question authority and challenge group-think conformity.
The band’s name derives from Motihari, India—birthplace of their spirit animal guide George Orwell—who serves as a constant reminder of the group’s mission: creating music that encourages listeners to think for themselves in this era of propaganda and algorithmic narrative control. “Brigade” is inspired by the International Brigades made up of volunteers from around the world, including Orwell and Hemingway among others, who went to fight fascism in Spain during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s.
Motihari Brigade combines electrifying rock music with provocative themes inspired by George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, Socrates, and other champions of free inquiry. Their songs explore mass media propaganda, militarism, the impact of technology, and the struggle to maintain human autonomy in an age of artificial intelligence – with an occasional touch of ironic humor to sweeten the pill. At the heart of the band’s signature Motihari sound is Eric Winston’s distinctive vibrato electric guitar style, supported by powerful driving rhythms, rich keyboard textures, and layered vocal arrangements.
The band’s 2020 debut album, Power From Below, introduced listeners to a unique blend of rebellious rock energy. Songs such as Power From Below, and Talking to Crazy combined humor, cynicism, and social commentary while delivering a message of individual empowerment. Critics praised the album’s originality, intensity, and willingness to challenge conventional narratives. Reviewers described it as “thinking person’s music” and compared its spirit to iconic acts such as The Clash and Rage Against the Machine.
In 2022, Motihari Brigade released its acclaimed second album, Algorithm & Blues, a high-energy collection of songs examining life in the digital age. Featuring thunderous guitars, dynamic rhythms, layered keyboard, horn, and vocal arrangements, the release received an enthusiastic response from listeners around the world who praised its creativity, musicianship, and thought-provoking themes. Reviewers described the album as rebellious, daring, imaginative, and unlike anything else in contemporary rock music.
Motihari Brigade’s third album, Problematic, continues the band’s philosophical exploration of Rock-n-Roll Thoughtcrime. Scheduled for release on June 25, 2026—George Orwell’s birthday—the album explores themes of algorithmic groupthink propaganda, artificial intelligence, and militarism. Combining sharp social commentary with powerful rock arrangements, Problematic encourages listeners to resist the pressures of intellectual conformity – Keep Asking Questions. Be Problematic.
The current Problematic lineup features:
Eric Winston – guitar, vocals, songwriter
Ron Kadish – bass
Niko Albanese – drums and percussion
Matt O’Brien – keyboards
Aria Stone – additional vocals
Released independently through Creative Destruction Records, Motihari Brigade remains committed to artistic freedom and a direct connection with their audience. Their music is available on compact disc, on major streaming and download platforms, and directly from the artist through Bandcamp.
At a time when technocratic power increasingly curates an artificial reality, Motihari Brigade is here to remind us that independent critical thinking is still possible.
